Pizza Fractions
Here is a sample lesson I taught on fractions to my third grade students. The pizza is used as a visual aide for students to see the difference between 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 or 1 whole. This lesson was successful because the students were able to relate to the pizza connection and they were able to see fractions in the sense of food instead of just numbers.
The Day The Crayons Quit Opinion Writing Piece
The Day The Crayons Quit is a fabulous read aloud! My students absolutely love this read and there are so many different, creative lesson plans that can be paired with this story. This lesson plan is an opinion piece where the students get to pick which crayon color they think should represent the class and explain why. The students are then given the opportunity to share aloud their opinion writing. Lastly, the class will vote on which color after hearing everyone's opinion.
Gum Drop STEM Trees
Before Christmas  I did a holiday STEM lesson with my students and they learned so much, all while having fun! The goal was to build the tallest standing tree using tooth picks and red and green gum drops! The students had to work together with their group members to come up with one design altogether. Once they were finished, I gave them a chance to present it to the class. As a class (for fun) we decided on the tallest standing tree. The students followed the Engineering Design Process as they created their gum drop tree.
